Friday, October 5, 2018 marked the first time ever that an on-duty Chicago cop was convicted for murdering a black teenager. This is a moment of closure for hundreds of people who have worked to bring some justice - whistleblowing, reporting, organizing, campaigning, litigating - the past four years. But it wasn’t a moment of joy.

How could we celebrate? Laquan, who should be 21, embodied the most neglected population in the city: sent to foster care, sent to alternative schools, sent to juvenile detention. This city’s institutions failed him long before Jason Van Dyke executed him in the street at age 17.

This is a conversation, an initial reaction, right after the verdict in People v. Van Dyke was announced.
